"Burma's military warns of firm action against pro-democracy activists"

[Radio Australia, 14 August 1999)

Burma's military rulers have warned they will take firm action against
pro-democracy activists after the junta reportedly discovered details of a
plan to instigate a massive general uprising next month.

Military spokesman, San Pwint, produced documents which purportedly listed
the names of those involved in the unrest and details about the planned
uprising on September 9th.

San Pwint said four dissidents had already been arrested and interrogated
about the planned unrest.

He said three other people allegedly involved in the campaign were on the
run.

San Pwint said the military government would continue to "diligently expose
and take firm action" against those planning dissent.
