0817-01 New Highway Bridge Promotes Border Trade
**A 320-feet long Maliyan Bridge was built at a cost of over US $ 0.15
Million. The bridge was inaugurated last August 15.

The reinforced concrete Bailey bridge lies on the Bhamo-Myitkyina Highway.
This will serve for the smooth transportation of goods between the northern
provincial capital of Myitkyina (nearly 1100 Km north of Yangon) and Bhamo,
a major commercial town near the Chinese border.

This northern highway is touted to be crucial for border trade between
Myanmar and the Yunnan province of China.

0817-02 Year 2000 Celebration on A Cruise Liner
**Eastern and Oriental Company, amongst the most successful tour operators
in Myanmar is organizing "Road to Mandalay" tour program.It is reportedly
one of the most expensive tour programs in the world and is targeted
towards travelers outside Myanmar.

The company has been earning so heavily from this program that plans are
underway to extend the route up to Bhamo, near Chinese border. The "Road to
Mandalay" has plans to hold the celebration of 'Millennium Tour' in Year
2000.

0817-03 Sony Opens New Office
**One of the world's top ranking electronic giant opens a new office in
Yangon yesterday.

High profile guests were in attendance at the Sony Marketing
International's opening ceremonies.

A mix of Asian and Western electronic companies is established in Myanmar,
notably the Mitsubishi corporation of Japan, Toshiba of Japan and Daewoo of
the Republic of Korea, among others. Daewoo has its own assembling plant in
Yangon and Toshiba Singapore is embarking on such scheme soon.

0817-04 New Tile Factory Saves Myanmar Millions of Dollars
**Myanmar imports about US$ 10 million worth of tiles annually for its
construction sector. The country usually requires tiles weighing to over a
hundred thousand tons every year.

Earlier this month a new tile factory has started operations. The new
factory is built on the 2-acre plot, situated about 120 km north of Yangon.
They target a production capacity of 8 million slabs per annum.

The machinery was imported from a company in Italy.

0817-05 Leather Proves Good Business for Local Cooperative
**A local leather industry cooperative is doing good business now with its
exports to other countries.

Sunshine Leather Goods Producers co-operative society is the most notable
in the cooperative. It produces assorted leather goods for men or ladies as
well as for children. The products range from clutch bags, purses,
travelers, handbags, executive bags, jerkins, jackets, trouser, hats and
slippers. Their products are made of genuine leather and are fetching good
prices in international market.

The Sunshine Cooperative Society was formed 7 years ago and has operations
nationwide.
