[Radio Australia, 24 August 99]

Burma's opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi says foreign tourists visiting
the country do nothing to help its political or long term economic
situation.

The 1991 Nobel laureate told the AFP news agency that foreign visitors did
not help to open Burma, which has been under harsh military rule for
decades.

Ms Suu Kyi, who heads the National League for Democracy, says most tourists
just want to enjoy themselves, despite knowing Burma is ruled by a
dicatatorship.

Burma's military junta, which seized power after losing the 1990 election,
is widely-accused of gross human rights abuses.
