Myanmar to reclaim more land in Bago Division

29 August 1999, Xinhua: A total of 50,633 hectares more fallow and virgin
lands in Myanmar's Bago Division will be reclaimed for cultivation to boost
the country's agricultural production, official newspaper "The New Light of
Myanmar" reported Sunday. These lands to be reclaimed were granted on
Saturday by the Myanmar Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation to 20 groups
of national entrepreneurs, it said. In March this year, 29,970 hectares of
such lands in the Division were granted to private entrepreneurs for
reclamation. According to official statistics, since the beginning of this
year, a total of 467,370 hectares of vacant, virgin, fallow and wet lands
have been reclaimed in Myanmar's six divisions and states --Ayeyawaddy,
Yangon, Bago, Magway, Tanintharyi and Shan. Meanwhile, the Government is
also planning to reclaim a total of 291,600 hectares of such lands in the
country's Mon and Kayin States. Statistics also show that Myanmar's rice
export picked up slightly from 93,000 tons in fiscal 1996-97 and 28,300
tons in 1997-98 to 123,000 tons in 1998-99 which ended in March following
three consecutive years' drop in the export since 1994-95 when it was 1.04
million tons. Myanmar's agriculture accounts for 36 percent of the gross
domestic product and 35 percent of the export value.
