NCUB Statement on Movement 9999

Statement issued by the National Council of the Union of Burma<br>

</b>The National Council of the Union of Burma (NCUB) state that we
devote ourselves to promoting the 9999 democratic movement. We call
on the people of Burma to demonstate en-masse, commencing on 9 September
1999 and not halting until victory is won. We also call on the rank
and file soldiers of the military not to use violence against the Burmese
people. In addition, we request the friendly resistance
organizations who currently have ceasefires with the regime to firmly
stand on the side of the people who are carrying out the
anti-dictatorship campaigns and to fully protect them. <br>

We ask that the international community closely follow the developments
within Burma and pressure the military regime to listen to the will of
the people.<br>

These calls are made following a joint meeting of the Presidents, the
Secretariat Committee and the committees of the NCUB that was held at the
Thai-Burma border from 4-7 September 1999. We concluded from our
discussions that the situation in Burma at this time has reached a crisis
point. We, the NCUB, have committed ourselves to devoting all our
efforts to manage this critical situation.<br>

We, the NCUB, aim to achieve a peaceful solution through dialogue.
However, at the same time, we will ensure that the necessary arrangements
are made to support every peaceful anti-dictatorship movement by the
people. It has always been and continues to be our principle to
stand by the people. <br>

We continue to closely monitor the social, political and economic
developments with Burma and in response have made numerous requests on
behalf of our poeple to the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC)
for peaceful political process to solve the problems of our
country.<br>

</font>The military dictators consistently ignore our requests. We
feel this demonstrates, without doubt, their lack of political will to
address the suffering of our people which has been caused by their
mismanagement. Monks, students and all people who try to express
their will peacefully are systematically arrested by the regime. We
feel that it is now time for the people of Burma to take action and to
demand change.<br>
