A splash of Yellow in South-east As (r)

Subject: A splash of Yellow in South-east Asia for 9999

For Immediate Release: September 9, 1999

When Yellow Stands for "Courage"

Asean-based human rights activists have vowed to use balloons, flowers,
stickers, candles and leaflets to make splash of yellow in Asean capitals
for September 9. The colour yellow is associated with Burma's democracy
movement, and September 9, or "9999" is intended to mark the beginning of a
campaign of overt resistance to Burma's military regime.

A range of activities focused on the theme "Courage" have been planned in
South-east Asia by such organisations as Burma Solidarity Group Malaysia,
Open Singapore Centre, Bruneians for Burma, Pijar Indonesia, Thai Action
Committee for Democracy in Burma, Forum-Asia, Free Burma
Coalition-Philippines and Altsean-Burma. Activists wearing T-shirts
featuring the words "Courage" ("Thatti-shi-ba") in Burmese and ethnic
languages will distribute yellow stickers, balloons, flowers and leaflets
in most Asean capital cities.
