Junta Forcing Students to Become Spies

The military authorities have been coercing the students to oversee and inform
about activities in support of democracy, said a businesswoman from Taunggyi
who is currently in Tachilek.

According to her, the Union Solidarity and Development Association, the pseudo
political party formed by Rangoon, had, since July, pressed the faculties in
all schools to organize their students from Grade 5 to Grade 10, each section
comprising ten students. The section leader's duty, she said, is to monitor the
movements of the members and make timely reports to the authorities.

"A stick and carrot policy was issued", she told S.H.A.N. "Punishment for
dereliction of duty and assurance of passing the examinations for doing a good
job".

The method is used not only for the students, she said, but also for the
teachers and in other occupations as well.

An observer commented, "This information-collecting system is copied from the
Cultural Revolution (1965-68), when even wives and husbands, children and
parents, and teachers and students spied on each other".
