This just in, around 12 pm midday here in France, T Desmarest and TOTAL
Fina have announced that the Elf pdg holdout, Jaffre has agreed to a
deal, for the takeover, where he retires.

No one is saying it here in the french press, but its all about payoff
and compensation, stock options and how much the Elf board and ceo get
to walk away. Remember 9 months ago, the Amoco head walked with $50
dollars compensation...

Like I said all along, Desmarest doesnt play to lose or be made to look
like a fool. And Jaffre is a ex civil servant functionary who knows when
he's beaten and how to take the money and run...
