British diplomat visits rights militant in Burmese jail

LONDON, Sept 15, AFP. A British diplomat visited James Mawdsley, a
British human rights activist who recently began a 17-year jail sentence in
the north of Burma, Wednesday, the Foreign Office said.

Tiffany Williams, a vice-consul, was the first British official to see
Mawdsley since he was sentenced for distributing anti-government tracts on
September 2.

"He was in good spirits and confirmed that he had not been tortured," a
Foreign Office spokesman said.

Mawdsley, 26, who has dual British and Australian nationality, has been
arrested twice before in Burma.

The trial of another British rights militant, Rachel Goldwyn, 28, opened
Wednesday in Yangon in the presence of British diplomats and journalists.
