Myanmar Exports 58,900 Tons of Fish, Prawn, XINHUA 

 YANGON, September 14 (Xinhua) -- Myanmar exported a total of 58,900 tons
of fish and prawn in fiscal 1998-99
which ended in March, a 7.6 percent increase over the previous year.
Figures provided by the country's Central Statistical Organization indicate
that of the total export volume, fish accounted for 45,700 tons and prawn
13,200 tons. Export earnings of fish and prawn in 1998-99 totaled 149.3
million U.S. dollars, 3.3 percent more than the previous year. Myanmar's
annual per capita fish and prawn consumption is 18 kilograms. Myanmar,
whose coastline extends 2,276 kilometers, is rich in fishery resources. The
country's fish and prawn breeding ponds cover 40,680 hectares with annual
fish and prawn output from the ponds amounting to 90,000 tons. In addition,
Myanmar's rivers flow crisscross and fresh water fish, caught in rivers,
amount to 150,000 tons. The country's average annual production of fish and
prawn tops 910,000 tons, of which over 240,000 tons are fresh water fish
and prawn, and 670,000 tons are deep sea fish and prawn. Since Myanmar
adopted an open-door economic
policy in late 1988, foreign investment, injected into the fishery sector,
reached 197 million dollars.
