Back To The Past - Today
The Armed Forces Staged the First Coup
The Defense Services, led by Gen Ne Win, staged a bloodless coup det'at
today, 28 September 1958, and overthrew the elected government of Premier U
Nu.
U Nu, in his memoirs, "Saturday's Son", revealed that the transfer of power
by himself was only to legalize the takeover by the Army.
Bamaw Tin Aung, a well known political writer, also exposed the real facts
behind the scene in his "Windermere Palace Intrigues".
It was believed by observers as Ne Win's attempt to head off any efforts by
Shans and Karennis to exercise their right of secession, which was
enshrined in the 1947 Union Constitution.
