Caffeine Declared Restricted Product in Thailand

BANGKOK (Sept. 27) XINHUA - Thailand's Office of the Narcotics Control
Board has declared caffeine to be a restricted substance in 32 districts
of six northern provinces bordering Myanmar and Laos, the Nation
reported Monday.

The decision was made following the growing popularity of caffeine as an
ingredient in amphetamine tablets, the newspaper said.

Caffeine has been mixed with other ingredients to help reduce production
costs.

Meanwhile, figures from the Customs Department showed that some 37 tons
of caffeine had been imported to Thailand between January and March this
year.

About 30 tons went to northern provinces for re-export to Myanmar, some
border areas of which house plants making amphetamine tablets for sale
in Thailand.
