STATEMENT OF LDF

LDF STATEMENT REGARDING SPDC EMBASSY SEIZURE

1. The Lahu Democratic Front (LDF) praises and honors the courage of the "
Vigorous Burmese Student Warriors" who successfully carried out their
historical duty as pro-democracy revolutionaries, to seize the SPDC Bangkok
embassy without harming anybody.

2. The LDF praises and honors the Royal Thai Government officials involved,
especially Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai, Interior Minister Gen. Sanan
Kachornprasart and Deputy Foreign Minister Sukhumbhand Paribatra, for their
skillful and perceptive handling of a most difficult crisis.

3. The LDF praises and honors General Saw Bo Mya for firmly holding to his
philosophy of "solving political problems only through peaceful political
means" instead of using brute force and intimidation. We firmly advocate
such peaceful solutions as well.

4. The LDF ardently appeals to the world community to apply more pressure
upon the brutal Burmese junta, that they may agree to direct talks with
pro-democracy leaders, including Nobel Peace Laureate Daw Aung San Suu Kyi,
to restore democracy and human rights to Burma.

5. The LDF urges the ASEAN Leaders to reconsider their policy of "
non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries" and "
constructive engagement"

In conclusion, all Burmese people, both inside and outside the country, are
sure that if the "Vigorous Burmese Student Warriors" were SPDC soldiers,
all hostages would have likely been killed.

As Prime Minister Chuan Leekpai and Interior Minister Sanan Kachornprasart
have said, the armed students are absolutely not" terrorists" They are
pro-democracy activists attempting to draw the attention of the world
community to their struggle to restore democracy and human rights to their
poor country. The real terrorists are those who call themselves"tatmadaw"
(Burma Army soldiers) who have been killing, torturing and raping
everywhere throughout Burma daily, for more than three decades now. The
clearest evidence of this is in the form of thousands and thousands of
Burmese refugees and displaced persons, both inside and outside Burma today.
