Dhaka, Yangon to discuss ship service, trade issues

Star Report

Bangladesh and Myanmar will discuss finalisation of an
agreement for coastal ship service between the two
countries and feasibility of construction of a bridge
over the Naaf river for expanding bilateral trade, BBC
reported yesterday.

The discussion will take place with ministers and
trade and industry leaders during the visit of Myanmar
Commerce Minister Maj Gen Kyaw Than, who arrives in
Dhaka today on a four- day visit.

The two sides will also discuss how to reduce trade
gap between the two countries, BBC said quoting
Commerce and Industries Minister Tofail Ahmed.

Despite great potential for promotion of mutually
beneficial business transaction, trading did not
expand between the two countries at the desired level.
The balance of limited trade between the two countries
however went against Bangla-desh, the broadcast said.

However, the trade volume rose slightly during the
last two years. Bangladesh and Myanmar signed a
bilateral trade agreement in 1994,it mentioned.

Bangladeshi business leaders held smuggling and low
government currency rate in Myanmar responsible for
the lower trade volume between the two countries. Kerb
market(black market) currency rate in Myanmar is
higher than official rate, BBC added.
