EU extends sanctions against Burma

The European Union has extended for another six months sanctions against
Burma, because of continuing concern over the state of human rights in the
country.

A statement of the EU foreign ministers meeting in Luxemburg said the EU
urged the government of Burma to take early and concrete steps towards
demonstrating respect for human rights and promotion of democracy.

The EU sanctions, first applied in 1996, include a ban on visits by Burmese
officials, withdrawal of trade privileges and an arms embargo.
