Myanmar leader on population

Myanmar leader on population

Xinhua, Yangon 13 October. Myanmar leader lieutenant-general khin nyunt
said the reaching of world population to six billion now has both positive
and negative aspects. Khin Nyunt, the first secretary of the Myanmar State
Peace and Development Council, made the comment at a ceremony here Tuesday
marking the day of six billion, official newspaper The New Light of Myanmar
reported Wednesday. On the positive side, he said, it is the result of
personal choice and collective action for better health and longer life,
while on the negative side, he added, the poorest countries often have the
highest population growth rates and the worst
reproductive health --the highest rates of maternal mortality and the
lowest rates of family planning use.
Khin Nyunt stressed that international cooperation and collaboration is of
paramount importance to
address the global issues. Khin Nyunt disclosed that Myanmar is making
plans to meet the difficulties that
may arise from the effect of growing population, adding that virgin and
fallow lands are being turned into
cultivable land to enhance food production. He stressed that Myanmar is
taking every measure to meet
the challenges of the growing population.

Myanmar's population has now reached 48 million with a 2 percent annual
growth, according to official
estimation.
