1020-01 Suzuki Invites Myanmar Ind'l Delegation to Japan
**A high level Myanmar Industrial delegation led by Myanmar's Minister for
Heavy Industry left for Japan, at the invitation of Suzuki Motor
Corporation of Japan on 18 October.

The 6-member Myanmar delegation will discuss the industrial cooperation
between two countries and observe the production of Suzuki motor vehicles
during their stay in Japan.

Suzuki Corporation of Japan assembles trucks and passenger cars in Myanmar
jointly with the Myanmar's Ministry of Heavy Industries.

1020-02 S'pore & HK Finance Institutions Conduct Seminars In Yangon
**A five days seminar on International Business Financing sponsored by the
Singapore Trade Development Board (STDB) was held in Yangon on 18th
October. 43 persons are expected to attend the seminar.

Meanwhile, Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation, who have
representative offices in Myanmar, opened a training course on Leadership &
Motivation in Yangon on 18 October. 14 officials from government and
private banks were invited to attend the three days training course.

1020-03 Japanese Entrepreneurs Meet Myanmar's Deputy PM
**Myanmar's Deputy Prime Minister met on 18th October with the visiting
Japanese entrepreneurs delegation in Yangon.

The Japanese delegation includes top management from All Japan Seaman's
Association, Japan's NYK Line and NYK Ship Management Company.

Myanmar's Deputy PM and Japanese entrepreneurs discussed on the commercial
marine as well as conditions of Myanmar seamen.

1020-04 Myanmar Trade Fair'99 In Hong Kong
**23 members of the Myanmar Women Entrepreneurs Association left Yangon on
18 October for Hong Kong.

Myanmar women entrepreneurs will participate in the Myanmar Trade Fair'99
to be held in Hong Kong from 19 to 23 of this month.

1020-05 Indonesian Company To Explore Coal In Myanmar
**Myanmar's Geological Survey & Mineral Exploration Department under the
Ministry of Mines and PT Austino Nusantara Energy of Indonesia went into
agreement for the mineral prospecting, exploration and feasibility study on
the development of coal resources in Myanmar's southern Thaninthayi coastal
region.

Testing and feasibility studies are usually conducted ahead before one is
allowed to prospect for minerals.  This is the usual practice before
applying for permit from the Myanma Investment Commission.

Meanwhile, during the past week the Director of PT Austino Nusantara
Company met with the secretary of Myanma Investment Commission to discuss
the investment matters

1020-06 Diplomatic/Foreign/Economic Relations
**This week's diplomatic, foreign and economic relations news are as
follows:
1. Last week newly appointed Indonesian ambassador to Myanmar presented his
credential to Myanmar head of state in Yangon.
2. During the past week high level Myanmar telecommunication delegation
visited the telecommunication equipment exhibition, Telecom'99 held in
Swiss capital Geneva from 10 to 17 October at the invitation of
International Telecom Union.
Also in past week a 4-member Myanmar construction entrepreneur team went on
a study tour to Malaysia at the invitation of the Myanmar Jardine Schindler
Ltd and Schindler Lift and Escalator Factory of Malaysia.
3. A contract was signed between China's Shandong Agricultural Industries
and Commerce Groups Corporation and Myanmar's Transport Ministry in Yangon
on 12 October. Under the contract the Chinese company will construct a new
shipyard in Yangon's Simaleik dockyard (about 30 minutes drive from down
town) at the cost of Kyats 1.05 billion (over US$ 3 million) including US$
25.45 million loan by the Chinese government for the shipyard construction.
The construction of 1,512-sq m shipyard is expected to finish by the late
2001. After the completion, the shipyard can allow for the repairing of
over 1,200 tons ships.
4. U Tin Winn, Ambassador Extraordinary Plenipotentiary of Myanmar to
United States of America, was appointed concurrently as Myanmar ambassador
to Argentina last week.
