MYANMAR COURT REFUSES TO PROSECUTE

Myanmar court refuses to prosecute govt officials

Xinhua, Yangon, 29 October 1999. The Myanmar Supreme Court has
rejected a case filed by the opposition National League for Democracy
(NLD) against some high-ranking government officials for their alleged
abuse of power in cracking down on the NLD. According to a court
document issued here Friday evening, Supreme Court Judge Tin Aung Aye
heard earlier on Friday the case filed by U Aung Shwe, NLD Chairman and
three other NLD Central Executive members U Than Tun, U Tun Tin and
U Lwin, who are also elected parliament representatives in the 1990 General
Election.

The charges filed against the Director-General of the Myanmar National
Bureau of Intelligence, Home Minister Colonel Tin Hlaing and 27 other
officials,
produced no sufficient evidence, the document said. The court decided that no
investigation will be further carried out concerning the case, the document
said.
Meanwhile, the NLD said in an announcement Friday that the party will seek
other channels in accordance with law to insist on the prosecution of the
officials.
