Red Sunshine Youth Workers' Organization

Statement upon the current suffering of Burmese Workers at Mae Sot.

Yaung Chi Oo

Date 9 Nov 1999

* We now release our statement concerning the Burmese workers who are in
serious trouble upon their arrest by the Thai authorities at Mae Sot, and
in which over 100,000 Burmese workers are starving.

* Since 1 Nov 1999, the authorities have been searching and arresting the
Burmese Workers the whole daylong. Thai businessmen could not prevent the
workers' arrest by Thai authorities, and they have forced workers to leave
from their factories. Moreover, the authorities have raided homes, small
working places and shops, and have arrested the workers. Though some
workers want to go back to their native land in order to avoid their
arrest, they have many problems; they can't go back to Burma easily, since
they have no money, no food and no shelter.

* We, Red Sunshine Youth Workers' Organization - formed on 1 June 1999,
intend to help and solve the problems of our fellow-sufferers, and will
assist and aid the current Burmese workers' situation here as soon as we
are able.

* Because we didn't have the opportunities for work or proper wages inside
Burma, we, the workers, were forced into Thailand as illegal laborers.
Therefore, we, the Red Sunshine Youth Workers' Organization, are living
under Thai rules. We feel that such arrests to the Burmese workers by Thai
authorities look like the annihilation of the rights of human-survival.
Therefore, as the Red Sunshine Youth Workers' Organization that is working
for the rights of fellow sufferers, we ask the Thai authorities to stop all
the arrests urgently with sympathy to the workers.

* We also appeal to the International governments, NGO groups, human rights
groups and international labor societies in order to prevent and assist the
Burmese workers who are now in danger on Thai soil.
