India, Myanmar sign accord to curb cross-border terrorism

AFP, New Delhi, 13 November, 1999. India and Myanmar ended a three-day
meeting on Saturday with an agreement to curb cross-border terrorism, the
Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.

The two countries, which share a 1,643 kilometre (1,018 mile) border,
signed a document agreeing to
"control and contain cross-border militancy in their respective territory,
drug trafficking and smuggling,
and opening of more border trade centres."

G.K. Pillai, joint secretary (northeast) in the Indian home ministry signed
the document with the deputy
director general of Myanmar's home ministry Maune Win, the PTI said.

Pillai told reporters that the Myanmar government had agreed to develop
"corresponding trade centres
in their territory to boost border trade."

New Delhi alleges that separatist rebels belonging to the outlawed United
Liberation Front of Assam
(ULFA), fighting for an independent state in northeast Assam, have set up
base in Myanmar.
