Nagaland needs effective policing to check extortion, drug-peddling

Nagaland Home Minister Neiphu Rio emphasised the need for equipping
State police
personnel in a more effective manner to combat problems like
drug-peddling and extortion.

"A new dimension of social problems in the form of drug peddling and
drug addiction has
almost invaded every home while extortion at gun-point has become the
order of the day,"
he said while speaking at a passing out parade of Nagaland police
personnel in Kohima
recently.

Effective policing has become most complex and difficult under such
situation where life
and property of people had been held to ransom, he said. The police
force would have to
identify various emerging challenges and prepare themselves to negotiate
them, he said.

The minister stressed on the need for reviewing recruitment system,
training, personnel
management and career planning of police forces in the light of new
challenges that
emerged as a result of social, economic and political changes.

Insisting on inculcating professionalism among police personnel with
accessibility to
technical advancement, Rio also laid stress on the necessities to usher
in changes in
attitude and orientation to counter the new challenges.
