Speaking on the occasion, the Secretary-2 said the work to use wood substitute fuel has merged together with Nine - Arid Regions Greening Project.

Regions of the central Myanmar became arid due to low rainfall and loss of forests. Under the guidance of Senior General Than Shwe, the Nine Arid Regions Greening Project is being implemented to improve the climate condition of the central Myanmar.

At present the project has been extended from nine regions to 13.

Utilization of wood substitute fuel has become an inevitable task to make the regions of central Myanmar green and verdant with forests. The year 1995 was designated as the wood substitute fuel utilization year. The work to use wood substitute fuel has achieved success to a certain degree.

Efforts should be made to gain more success in implementing the task as 1999 was designated as the year to extend the use of wood substitute fuel. By using raw material such as husk, which is the byproduct of rice mills of the Ministry of Commerce, coal and oil residue, production of briquettes has been extended in the nation. Farm byproducts are also used in making briquettes.

Together with the departments, enterprises are also taking part in producing briquettes; and briquettes produced by the departments, township organizations and enterprises are being displayed at the exhibition.

Broader use of substitute fuel will lead to reduction in the loss of trees, helping towards regional greening and improvement of weather.

Personnel of the respective States and Divisions should strive to extend their briquette production enterprises.

Joint Secretary of the work committee Director of Forest Department reported on the production of wood substitute fuel.

The Secretary-2 and party then inspected various brands of briquette manufacturing machines, briquettes produced from various raw materials, briquette stoves and machines to produce solar fuel.
