Call for support for April 2000 Student Solidarity Conference

Throughout the Asia Pacific region many people are struggling against
oppression, from Indonesia and East Timor to Burma. In many cases, the
Australian government is on the side of the oppressors. Students in
Australia have a long history of supporting international struggles, and our
solidarity is needed now more than ever.

To facilitate student awareness around struggles taking place in the region
and the role of students in particular within them, Action in Solidarity
with Indonesia and East Timor has initiated a student solidarity conference
to take place in Sydney, April 2000. The conference will be open to all
students, and will invite representatives from student movements in the
region to attend and speak about the history and current state of the
struggles in their countries. The conference will also be a forum for
launching national initiatives for student solidarity campaigns.

In order for this initiative to be successful, we urge all student
organisations to support the conference, and in particular to offer whatever
concrete assistance possible. This includes financial support to fund
students from the region to speak at the conference, and also assistance in
promoting the conference amongst the members of your student organisation. A
number of student organisations have already sponsored the conference. We
urge you to join them.

In solidarity,

Kerryn Williams (Action in Solidarity with Indonesia and East Timor)
