(1) Ambassador U Tin Latt Accredited to Iran

    The Chairman of the State Peace and Development
Council of the Union of Myanmar has appointed U Tin
Latt, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of
the Union of Myanmar to the Republic of India,
concurrently as Ambassador Extraordinary and
Plenipotentiary of the Union of Myanmar to the Islamic
Republic of Iran.

(2) Botahtaung Inland Container Depot No. 2
Commissioned into Service

    A ceremony to open Botahtaung Inland Container Depot
No. 2 of Myanma Port Authority under the Ministry of
Transport  was held in front of the container depot on
2 December.  At the ceremony held in the hall of the
inland container depot, Minister for Transport  said :
a total of 11.793  billion Korean won and about  K 430
million are to be used for construction of Botahtaung
Inland Container Depot and it is scheduled to complete
the construction work in three years' time.

       An agreement on purchase of construction
materials for the project and machinery for handling
containers has been signed by Samsung Corporation of
the Republic of Korea and Myanma Port Authority. It is
a project designed and implemented  by Myanmar
engineers.  The project covers 16.45 acres of land and
the inland container depot takes up 14.93  acres. The
main building is a container warehouse, 250 feet long
and  200  feet wide. The  project covers 17 kinds of
construction works such as buildings including a 33 KV
power station and  an 11 KV power station, an
embankment and  a brick wall. There are nine items of
container-handling machinery including two Gantry
Cranes. A concrete block machinery  imported for the
project  has produced 1.5 million of reinforced 
concrete   blocks and about three million of concrete
blocks will be used at the project. The project began
in December 1997, and 75 per cent of construction work
has  been completed. The project will be completed in
the Year 2000. 

        On completion of the inland container depot,
1,962 containers with goods, 800 empty containers and
60 cold storage containers can be kept at the  project
at the  same time. The  inland  container depot will
be able to handle an increasing number of containers
systematically and effectively. Managing Director of
Samsung Corporation Mr. J W Yoon explained matters
related to the inland container depot.

(3) Thai Deputy Minister of Commerce Leaves

    Thai economic delegation led by Deputy Minister of
Commerce of Thailand Mr Phaithoon Kaeothong left
Yangon by air  on 2 December.

(4) Fifth Leg of Golf Tour Begins in Kengtung

    The Fifth Leg of Myanmar London Golf Tour jointly
sponsored  by Myanmar Golf Federation and Myanmar
Professional Golfers'  Association and with  the
assistance of Rothmans of Pall Mall Myanmar Pte Ltd
began  at Kengtung Golden Triangle Golf Club on 2
December.  After the first round, in professional
golfers' event, Aye Myint is leading with 73 strokes.
Aung Win is at the second place with 76, while Maung
Maung Tar and Min Lwin Oo tie at the third place with
76 each. In men's amateur, Min Naing is at the first
place with 69. Zaw Zin Win of Han Golf Masters Pte
Ltd, Min Lagun Aen and Win Naing  tie at the second
with 76 each. Tiger Beer, Universal Consumer Goods Co,
Mandalay Rum, Yangon Airways, MIMS Logistics, Max, 
Soft Guide Computer, Cannon and Wilson are providing
assistance for the success of the tour. It continues
at the same venue at 7 am on 3 December. 

(5) Ministers, Deputy Ministers of Five Nations Arrive

    Minister for Rural Development of India Mr. Sunder
Lal Patwa and party and Minister of  Local
Development, Women and Social Welfare of Nepal Mr.
Chirinjibi  Wagle  arrived Yangon by air on 2 December
to attend the Twelth Regular Meeting  of Governing
Council (GC) of CIRDAP. Deputy Minister of Local
Government Rural  Development of Bangladesh Mr. Saber
Hossain Chowdhury, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and
Forestry of Lao People's Democratic Republic Mr.
Sitahene Rasphone, Under Secretary of Department of
Agrarian Reform of the Philippines Mr. Conrado S
Navarro and high-ranking officials of Sri Lanka also
arrived Yangon in the evening. They were welcomed by
officials.
 
(6) Myanmar Mayflower Bank Opens Branch in Muse

    The 17th branch of Myanmar Mayflower Bank Ltd was
opened  in Muse, a border town between the Union of
Myanmar and the People's  Republic of China, on 30
November. Border trade is being encouraged  in Muse 
and  80%  of border trade of Myanmar is being
undertaken in Muse. The  opening of private banks in
Muse can contribute much to development of border
trade.  Muse Branch is the fourth of Myanmar Mayflower
Bank Ltd  in Shan State and the second in Shan State
(North). The first branch was opened in Lashio on 22
October and the second branch of Shan State (East) 
will soon be opened in Kengtung. There will be five
branches in Shan State. On the opening day of the
branch, altogether 932 customers deposited over K 45
million, over K 50.2 million were remitted and K 32.5
million were transferred.

(7) Myanmar Universal Bank Ltd Opens Branch in Mogkok

    Myanmar Universal Bank Ltd opened  a branch in
Mogkok, Mandalay Division on 30 November. The branch
opened in Mogok is the 13th of Myanmar Universal Bank
Ltd and the second in Mandalay  Division. Myanmar
Universal Bank Ltd  will open  Tayoketan branch, Wadan
Branch, Taunggyi Branch, Muse Branch, Kawthoung
Branch, Tachilek Branch,  Myawady Branch, Monywa
Branch and Sittway Branch. On the opening day of the
branch, 1,899 customers deposited  over K 89.2
million.
