(1) The fourth anniversary marking the Diamond Jubilee
of Myoma Boys and Girls? Schools was held
YANGON, 2 Dec - The fourth anniversary marking the Diamond Jubilee of Myoma
Boys and Girls? Schools was held at No 2 Basic Education High School (Myoma
School) in Dagon Township this morning, addressed by Chairman of Myanmar
Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council
Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.
It was held in conjunction with the ceremony to present prizes to outstanding
students and to make donations for upgrading of the multi-media teaching
centres and the get-together of old Myoma students and new generation
students.
Speaking on the occasion, Secretary-1 Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt said today was the
National Day marking the national movement which had erected a milestone in
the history. The colonialists, using their military might, unjustly annexed
the mother country which had stood as an independent nation; and after
enslaving and bullying the nation for a long time, the colonialists, in
accord with the scheme, enacted the University Act in 1920 to ruin the
ability of Myanmars, to drag them to miserable situation, to diminish their
nationalistic fervour, to make them rely on other nations, to destroy their
traditions and culture add patriotic spirit and to prolong the colonialists?
subjugation.
Today was the 79th Anniversary of the auspicious National Day which emerged
from the daring nationalist movement launched on 5 December 1920 (10th waning
of Tazaungmon 1282 ME) under the leadership of farsighted and patriotic
university students who were against the Act. It was also the 79th birthday
of the Myoma School famous as a milestone in introducing national education
and opposing the colonial education, which was a result of the nationalist
movement.
The Myoma School which is indispensable from the history of the nationalist
struggle was an honourable National School; because of Myoma spirit, the
Myoma School with fine traditions had become a model for national schools.
Myoma spirit is the will to safeguard the race which is patriotic spirit; the
spirit of national solidarity or Union spirit; the spirit to preserve and
cherish traditions and culture; and the spirit to safeguard the sovereignty
of the Union of Myanmar.
Thus, Myoma spirit is nationa1 spirit and national spirit is also Myoma
spirit. It is significant that Myoma spirit is the same with the State
objectives laid down by the government.
Today was the fourth anniversary of the Diamond Jubilee of the Myoma School,
which was observed by old Myoma students with the assistance of the
government in 1995.
A trust fund for all-round education of the new generation youths was founded
with the capital of K 893,535 at the Myoma School Diamond Jubilee
celebration. Panel of Patrons of the Trust Fund and Treasury Council were
also formed.
The interest of the fund is being used in providing awards for outstanding
performance in education, sports and art and scholar awards year-wise
beginning 1996-97 academic year.
The Secretary-l elaborated on the donations to former Myoma Schools, saying
the Trust Fund has increased to over K 3.91 million at present.
He said as the development of human resources is vital in building the nation
so also the schools are the most basic sectors in bringing out human
resources.
With the leadership of the State and the participation of the school board of
trustees, parents and the people multi-media teaching centres are being
opened at schools in striving to catch up with the information technology of
the world.
Emergence of technologies from 18th Century to before the end of 20th Century
was based on experience only. But the future technologies will be based on
skill, intelligence and invention.
Efforts of the members of the school board of trustees and teachers are much
important as schools are the key factor in bringing out human resources with
brilliant intellectual level.
Today, it has passed over 50 years since Myanmar reemerged as a sovereign and
independent nation after freeing herself from colonial administration. In
other words, Myanmar has become a sovereign and independent nation for more
than half a century.
During the 50 years, the nation had had to suffer the evil consequence of
manipulations, oppressions, exploitations, poverty, near disintegration of
the Union resulting from dissensions among national brethren which arose due
to suspicions for over 40 years. Only in the final decade of the 20th
Century, the nation was able to strengthen love and unity among the national
people; and the national people were able to strive for the emergence of a
modern and developed nation with unity.
The forcible seizure of the Myanmar Embassy in Thailand is a firm proof that
the destructive elements are trying to drag the youths to become terrorists
with evil and negative views at a time when efforts are being made with added
momentum and with the force of national solidarity in bringing out the human
resources as the national duty.
The new generation youths should also strive to uplift their intellectual
skill with zeal, perseverance and courage; to vitalize their patriotic spirit
which is the will to safeguard the race; to cherish and preserve the
traditions and culture and heritage, to strengthen their Union spirit; and to
become good citizens accepting the teachings of their parents and teachers.
Also present on the occasion were ministers, the Attorney-General, deputy
ministers, senior military officers, officials, old. Myoma students, school
heads, teachers and their pupils of BEHS 2 and BEHS 3 of Dagon, parents,
members of the school board of trustees and guests.
Well-wishers presented K 2.6 million for Myoma Schools.
The donations included K 1 million by Bandoola U Shwe, K 700,000 by
Manijotadhaja U Khin Myint, K 500,000 by U Nay Aung and K 10,000 by Minister
for Social Welfare, Relief and Resettlement Maj-Gen Sein Htwa.
Prizes were presented to students who were outstanding in education and
sports and who won prizes at the Myanmar Traditional Cultural Performing Arts
Competition.
