AUDREY'S MISSILES
A newsletter dedicated to the peaceful
reform of the United States government.
THE BATTLE IN SEATTLE
Not noticed by most Americans a small group of determined citizens
marched with the tens of thousands who succeeded in delaying the opening of
the World Trade Organization meeting this week in Seattle. The group carried
FREE BURMA signs. Why should Americans care about this issue? After all,
Burma is a small country way over there across the vast Pacific Ocean on
another continent. What does it matter what happens in Burma?
It matters a great deal. Burma has a narco-government. In plain
English, it is composed of criminals who cooperate with the drug lords who
are exporting the lion's share of world's heroin. The military control the
country. They burn, ravage, torture and murder at will. The legitimate
commodities that are made and exported are produced with forced labor and
child labor. Setting aside humanitarian considerations, what country in the
world would want to sell produce in competition with this kind of a system?
Yet Burma does export manufactured goods to the United States. Incredibly,
Myanmar (Burma) is listed as one of the 134 members of the World Trade
Organization (WTO)! The FREE BURMA signs carried by the little group of
protestors made common cause with America's workers and both groups know
that some WORLD ORGANIZATIONS ARE DOING BUSINESS WITH CRIMINALS. The Clinton
Administration, while imposing a few sanctions on Burma which are not
effective, works to keep the rogue narco-countries in the WTO! Massachusetts
has passed a law boycotting Burma, and a number of other states state and
municipalities are considering the same thing. It is indeed a very sad day
and a very ominous sign for the future of this country when Americans must
circumvent acts of federal government which are blatantly criminal in nature.
The Mayor of Seattle estimated the crowd of protestors at 34 or 35
thousand. Given the fact that a fifty block area (approx.) was eventually
sealed off there may have been more. There were many groups represented, all
concerned about places overseas where children, prisoners, and others are
either forced to work or are put to work at very low wages. Clinton has
opened the doors to the American market regardless of the barriers in the
countries sending goods here. How long will we have our nine trillion dollar
market if people lose good paying jobs and are either unemployed or are
employed at very low wages? Where is all the profit going? One Canadian
said, "WTO rules are nothing less than an international bill of rights for
international corporations." Their proceedings are kept secret, and the
proponents of this brand of free trade (Clinton and his trade negotiator) now
give only lip service to those who protest. Where will it lead us? They are
setting the stage for the inclusion of China, and if the pattern is followed
then, as the Colombian cartels gain territory, are they next? American
farmers are going bankrupt, our factories have all gone overseas, and many
more are jobless than reports indicate. (Check the reports of the numbers of
homeless people.) If the lop- sided trade policies cannot be stopped
American working people will be dragged down to the level of third world
workers which will help no nation. The money and power it brings will
strengthen the narco-countries and the big business ventures who are allied
with them. World leaders know what Clinton is. They were invited, but not a
single one came. All the protestors know what is happening. As they were
clapped in the detention facilities they sang GOD BLESS AMERICA.
