(1)     Secretary-1 Receives US Senator

    Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development
Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt received Senator Mr. John F
Kerry and party of the United States, currently in
Yangon, who called at Dagon Yeiktha  of the Ministry
of Defence on 7 December.

(2)    Donations Towards Funds to Install Lithotripters
        
       Well-wishers presented donations towards funds
to install lithotripter at Yangon General Hospital on
7 December. A lithotripter was installed at the New
Yangon General Hospital and plans  are in progress to
install another one at Mandalay People's  Hospital.
The government is rendering assistance as much as
possible in fulfilling the requirements of the
Ministry of Health's tasks in ensuring health and
longevity for the people. Lithotripter is one among
the advanced  medical equipment the government  is
installing at hospitals.  The lithotripter can cure
kidney  patients without surgical operation. 

(3) Third Myanmar-Japan Joint Economic Conference Ends

    The Third Myanmar-Japan Joint Economic Conference
continued for the second day at the  International
Business Centre in Yangon on 7 December. It was
attended by Minister at the  State Peace and
Development Council Chairman's Office Brig-Gen Abel,
Deputy Minister for National Planning and Economic
Development,  Chairman of Myanmar-Japan Joint Economic
Committee  Mr. T Torium, Japanese Ambassador,
officials of departments concerned, the President of
the Union of Myanmar Federation of Chambers of
Commerce and Industry, and  EC members and guests.
Adviser Dr. Kyaw Htin of the Ministry of Industry-2
and Dr. Chan Nyein of the Ministry of Science and
Technology submitted papers on Myanmar
Industrialization and Human Resource Development
respectively.  Participants took part in the
discussions.
 
(4) Construction of Earthquake-Resistant Buildings Stressed

    Meteorology and Hydrology Department of the Ministry
of Transport held a seminar on seismology on 7
December at the department with an address by Minister
for Transport.  He said: Myanmar is situated on the
Alpide Seismic Belt. As earthquakes with strong
intensity can occur in the nation, the government  is
taking necessary and advanced measures for the safety
of lives and property. The respective departments are
taking into  account the seismic data in constructing
buildings to reduce the risk of earthquakes. Public
Works, Department of Human Settlement and Housing
Development and Yangon City Development Committee
should  consider the seismic data  in constructing
earthquake-resistant buildings. Resource persons
should make efforts for the reduction of the
earthquake risks in Myanmar based on their
experiences. The chairman of World Seismic Safety
Initiative (WSSI) and the Chief Executive Officer of
Oya Corporation also gave speeches. It will continue
on 8 December. 
 
(5) CSO Deputy Statisticians Leave for Sri Lanka

    3 deputy statisticians of Central Statistical
Organization, Ministry of National Planning and
Economic Development left Yangon by air on 4 December
for Sri Lanka to attend Inter Country Training Course
on Morbidity Coding Using ICD-10 Training Course to be
held from 6 to 17 December in Sri Lanka.

(6) Seminar on Patient Centred Nursing Care Model Begins

    The seminar on Patient Centred Nursing Care Model,
jointly sponsored by the Myanmar Nurses Association
(Central) and World Health Organization (WHO)  began
at Medical Research Department (Yangon) on  7
December.  Patient Centred Nursing  Care Model
Projects are being launched at North Okkalapa Township
 People's  Hospital and Kayin State People's Hospital
in Hpa-an Township and  plans are under way to extend
the project in Mandalay soon. Minister for Health
delivered an address on the occasion. Resident
Representative of WHO also gave a speech. Chairperson
of Myanmar Nurses Association briefed the meeting on
presenting proposals for launching the project.
Participants presented matters relating to the
vitality of launching the Patient Centred Nursing Care
Model  in other hospitals.
 
(7) Institute of Economics to Hold Convocation
 
    The 33rd Convocation of Institute of Economics
(Yangon) will be held for graduates of MBA degree,
diplomas and other master degrees for 1998-99 academic
year on 26 February, 2000.
 
(8) More Canoeing Teams Arrive
 
    Chairman of Racing Committee of the 1st South-East
Asian Canoe Championship Mr. John Leukemans of
International Canoe Federation who will conduct the
International Canoe Referee Examination arrived Yangon
by air on 7 December. Similarly, the Malaysian
canoeing team comprising eight men and six women led
by  Mr. Jamalulil Juffery and the Singaporean canoeing
team comprising six men and four women led by Ms.
Brene Chia Ai Ling arrived  Yangon by air  on 7
December to take part in the 1st South-East Asian
Canoe Championship, 1999,  on Inya Lake,  Myanmar
Rowing  and Canoeing Federation,  from 9 to 12
December. The canoe teams of Lao PDR, Brunei and the
Philippines also arrived Yangon by air on the same day.
