Subject: San San Nweh: RSF/ Burmese press freedom fighters

The number of journlaists in Burmese prisons appears to have doubled
since the number of "at least six" journalists as of Jan 1998. R. San
San Nweh, arrested with Sein Hla Oo and held at Insein prison since
August 1994 "a civilian court sitting inside the prison sentenced them
to seven years under article 5 of the emergency law "for publishing
information harmful to the state". One of the allegations made agianst
San San Nweh was that she had talked to two French journalists, with her
back to the camera, for a documentary made in April 1993. She was
sentenced another three years under article 14 of the emergency law,
which deals with illegal organisations."
