(1) Secretary-1 pays homage to Padamya Myetshin Buddha Image at 
    the Shwedagon
            
YANGON, 10 Dec-Pat. on for the Committee for Perpetual All-round Renovation 
of the Shwedagon Pagoda Secretary-l of the State Peace and Development 
Council Lt Gen Khin Nyunt, accompanied by officials of the State Peace and 
Development Council Office, arrived at the southern entrance to the pagoda at 
5 am today.
On the upper terrace of the pagoda, the Secretary-l and party took the Nine 
Precepts at Padamya Myetshin Buddha Image.
Then, the Secretary-l offered flowers, lights, and water to the Buddha 
Image,for the ceremony to enshrine, relics in the upper reliquary of 
Shwedagon Htidaw Pagoda and hoist Htidaw atop it and for all-round renovation 
of Naungdawgyi Pagoda.
            
Then, the Secretary-1 went around the Shwedagon Pagoda three times, 
performing the rituals of silver and golden showers.

Afterwards, the Secretary-l inspected renovation of the archway of the 
western entrance.

(2) Outstanding performance of students the best proof of success 
    of education promotion programmes Secretary-l presents prizes 
    to outstanding students
            
YANGON, 10 Dec- Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-l of the 
State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt,presented prizes to 
students who passed the matriculation examination, for their outstanding 
performance in 1998-99 academic year, at Sabei Hall of Basic Education High 
School No 2 in Sangyoung Township this morning.

Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and 
Development Council Lt -Gen Khin Nyunt delivered an address. He said:
At the present time efforts are begin made to turn out the youths of new 
generation who acquire outstanding qualities and education of high standard 
by implementing education promotion programmes at the basic education 
schools, it is heartening to see that outstanding students are now assembling 
actively and cheerfully in a body, and it is also an encouraging sight for 
the future of the nation.
As is known to all, the State Peace and Development Council is in the 
vanguard in striving for harmonious development of political, economic and 
social Development of human resources plays an important role in developing 
the nation with added momentum, and effort s are being made to nurture the 
student youths from basic education schools, the lifeblood of human 
resources, to become the firm resources on which the Government can rely.

The lofty goal of the present national education policy calling for nurturing 
the youths of new generation who will love and cherish the nation and build 
the nation into a modern and developed nation, is truly reflecting the 
requirements of the State.

The world of today is changing and improving rapidly: so, it is necessary to 
nurture the youths of new generation with the aim of being able to catch up 
with the momentum of development of the State and to have spiritual 
development with a view to enabling them to protect national interests.

The student youths of today are the youths of new generation who will 
shoulder the responsibilities of the State in the 21 st century which is.just 
around the corner; they need to be-given education and technology which are 
appropriate to the incoming political, economic and social environs; only 
then, will the nation be able to stand in keeping abreast with other nations; 
in the same. vein, with a view to ensuring that the Union can stand firm and 
tall in the international community, it is necessary to nurture the student 
youths to be imbued with a sense of safeguarding and protecting the nations 
well-rounded education at the basic education schools, especially for 
spiritual development such as national outlook based on patriotism, Union 
spirit which makes for the further strengthening of national solidarity, a 
sense of loving lineage and cultural traditions, the code of conduct and a 
sense of respect for international laws; training and education are also 
given by setting up multimedia teaching centres where information technology, 
computer technology and modem teaching aids are used. 
Continuous emergence of patriotic intellectual and intelligentsia in large 
numbers will lead to reaching the national goal peaceful, pleasant, modern 
and developed nation soonest.

Thus, all should join hands with the government in bringing out good sons and 
daughters on whom the nation can rely in the future.
Combining the State?s true leadership, the systematic teachings of the 
mentors, assistance being rendered by the parents and the people and the 
efforts of the students, harmonious endeavours should be made to enhance the 
national education for flourishing of the peaceful pursuit of education and 
bringing out patriotic intellectuals and intelligentsia who will benefit the 
race and the religion to reach the national goal soonest.
            
In conclusion, the Secretary-l urged the prize winning youths.Then, Chairman 
of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development 
Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt presented the first prize to Maung Myo Myint of 
Institute of Education Practising School in Kamayut Township, in the 
matriculation examination for 1998-99 academic year, the second prize to 
Maung Aung Thu of Mahlaing BEHS, third prizes to Ma Kay Khaing Win and Maung 
Soe Than of Dagon BEHS No 1, the fourth to Ma Myat Hsu Mon of Mandalay BEHS 
No 8, the fifth to Maung Min Thura Hlaing of. PyinOoLwin BEHS No 3, sixth 
prizes to Maung Zeya Soe of Yamethin BEHS No 1, Ma Thi Le Win of Mandalay 
BEHS No 22, Ma May Thu Win of Yankin BEHS No 2 and Ma May Hlaing Hlaing Win 
of Latha BEHS No 2, seventh position prizes to Ma Swe Zin Linn of Pyawbwe 
BEHS, Ma Moe Moe Linn of Thingangyun BEHS No 2, Ma Aye Thida of Latha BEHS No 
2, Ma Nwe Nwe Win of Latha BEHS No 2 and Maung Aung Zaw Tun of Myaungmya BEHS 
No 1, eighth prizes to Ma Thwe Hnin Kywe of Mandalay BEHS No 8, Ma Nwe Oo Mon 
of Mandalay BEHS No 16 and Ma Than Than Aye of Latha BEHS No 2, the ninth 
prize to Maung Kyaw Zin Latt of Hmawby BEHS No 1, tenth position prizes to Ma

Next, the Secretary-1 and guests were entertained to variety Myanmar 
traditional dances and songs presented by students.

Later, the Secretary-l, ministers, deputy ministers and members of the 
Myanmar Education Committee had documentary photographs taken together with 
students outstanding in the matriculation examination for 1998-99 academic 
year and those who entertained Myanmar traditional dances and songs to the 
guests.

(3) Myanmar wins eight gold medals in 1st SEA Canoe Championship
YANGON, 10 Dec- The 1st South-East Asian Canoe Championship,1999, was held at 
Myanmar Rowing and Canoeing Federation, Inya Lake, this afternoon.

Myanmar team won eight gold medals in eight events? office competition. The 
teams of Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, 
Thailand, Vietnam and host Myanmar are taking part in the competition today.

In men?s 1000- meter single kayak event, Phone Myint Teza of Myanmar won the 
first prize, Indonesia the second and Vietnam the third.

In women?s 1000-meter single kayak event, Khin Mar Oo of Myanmar won the 
first prize, Thailand the second and Vietnam the third. In men?s 1000-meter 
single canoe event, Soe Myint Than of Myanmar won the first prize, Indonesia 
the second and Vietnam the third.

In women?s 1000-meter double kayak event, Naw HsayLar and Than Than Oo of 
Myanmar won the first prize, Vietnam the second and Thailand the third.

In men?s 1000-meter double canoe event, Aung Linn and Mya San of Myanmar won 
the first prize, the Philippines the second and Thailand the third. In men?s 
1000-meter double kayak event, Kan Shwe and Than Tin of Myanmar won the first 
prize, Indonesia the second and Vietnam the third.

In men?s 1000-meter quadruple kayak event, Myat Khaing, Myo Zaw, Moe Zaw and 
Shwe Than Naing won the first prize, Thailand the second and Vietnam the 
third. 

In women?s 1000-meter quadruple- kayak event, Mya Khin, San San Win, Tin Tin 
Ngwe and Zar Zar Win of Myanmar won the first prize, Thailand the second and 
Malaysia the third.

Afterwards, member of the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of 
Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Khin Maung 
Than. member of Leading Patrons of Myanmar Women?s Sports Federation Dr Daw 
Khin Win Shwe, Secretary-General of International Canoe Federation Mr Otto 
Bonn and officials presented prizes to the winners. The competition continues 
tomorrow.

(4) First South-East Asian Canoe Championship begins            
YANGON, 10 Dec-The opening ceremony of the First South-East Asian Canoe 
Championship took place at the 
Myanmar Rowing and Canoeing Federation, Inya Lake, here, at 2 pm today and it 
was attended by Chairman of the National Olympic Council Secretary-l of the 
State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt and Secretary-2 Lt Gen 
Tin Oo.

Also present on the occasion were member of the State Peace and Development 
Council Chairman of Yangon Division Peace and Development Council Commander 
Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than and others including General Secretary of Intentional 
Canoe Federation Mr Otto Bonn, General Secretary of Asian Canoe Federation Mr 
Ali Ghlamsiyah and managers, coaches and athletes of the nations, namely, 
Brunei Darussalam, Cambodia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Vietnam 
and Myanmar.
First, participating teams made up of managers and athletes took their 
designated places. Chairman of the Organizing Leading Committee Brig-Gen 
Thura Aye Myint delivered the opening address. He said:
It is a great privilege and pleasure for me to extend warmest greetings and 
sincere best wishes to all the guests and participants who have come here 
today to grace this auspicious occasion of the opening of the first South 
East Asian Canoe Championship to be held at the Inya Lake, from 9th to 12th 
December, 1999.

We in Myanmar, deem it a great honour to be entrusted with the responsibility 
to host the South East Asian Canoe Championship, the first ever regional and 
international Canoe Championship to be held in Myanmar. I would like to 
extend a warm welcome to all the athletes, coaches, officials and delegates 
from the Asean region, who are in our golden land Myanmar, well known for its 
Shwe Dagon Pagoda which is one of the wonders of the world.
            
In conclusion I wish every success to all the competitors and hope that you 
will enjoy a most pleasant stay in Myanmar and will be able to enhance the 
friendship and understanding between our countries through this tournament. 
Afterwards, Secretary- l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt greeted the managers of the 
participating teams.

The Secretary-l and party then watched the events of the First South East 
Asian Canoe Championship.

(5) Minister inspects building of railway coaches
YANGON, 1 0 Dec- Minister for Rail Transportation U Pan Aung party inspected 
sheds assembling passenger coaches and goods wagons at Myitnge railway area 
this morning.

He also inspected plantations for staff welfare here and gave !instruction on 
selling vegetables at reasonable prices and extending cultivation of seasonal 
vegetables.

While inspecting the sheds, the minister gave instructions on decoration of 
the upper-class coaches. The minister left there at 8 am to inspect 
KhinU-YeU-Budalin railroad section.

(6) Stone Age, Bronze Age implements donated to National Museum
YANGON, 10 Dec-Stone Age and Bronze Age implements together with beads of Pyu 
Era were donated by well-wishers to the National Museum through the Office of 
Strategic Studies.

They were handed by Staff Officer (Grade II) Mai Kyaw Kyaw of the Office of 
Strategic Studies to Director General of Department of Cultural Institute U 
Myint Thein Swe this morning.

The objects were donated by U Tun Aye, Proprietor of Shwebahosi Guest House 
and Goldsmith in Pyawbwe and wife Daw Khin San Myint, Director of Basic 
Education Department No 2 U Aye Ko of Mandalay, and Meza Sayadaw U Kumara.

Of them, nine objects were three tiger-shape figurines and six beads, and 
they were found by the donors while digging the  earth for construction of a 
school building on their plot in Ywahtingon Village, Pyawbwe Township.

The objects donated by U Aye Ko and Sayadaw U Kumara were two bronze weapons 
and two stone weapons. They were found in Ganan region, Banmauk Township. The 
two bronze weapons are socketed bronze axes which were used in Myanmar Bronze 
Age. Of the stone weapons, one was used in late Stone Age and the other two 
in early Stone Age.

(7) Chairman of NCCMC inquires after health of delegates at hospital
YANGON 10 Dec - Chairman of the National Convention Convening Management 
Committee Brig-Gen Tin Aye, together with Secretary of the Committee Lt-Col 
Win Naung and Secretary of Health Subcommittee Lt-Col Kyi Lin, inquired after 
delegates of the National Convention U Mahn Tin Aung Than, U Myat Htwe, U Hla 
Yee and U Bo Shwe Mya who are receiving medical treatment at Yangon General 
Hospital this morning. Dr Teik Wan and physicians reported on health 
conditions of the delegates.

    Machinery Import & Export Corp
YANGON, 10Dec-Minister for Industry-l U Aung Thaung met Managing Director of 
China National Constructional & Agricultural Machinery Import & Export 
Corporation Mrs Luo Yan and party who called at his office at 4 pm today.

(9) MPT to conduct more courses in accord with practical requirements
YANGON, 10 Dec-Radio Operator Course 1/99, Basic Electronic Courses 2/99, 
Basic Telegraphic and Technology Course 2/99 and Postal Clerk Refresher 
Course 2/99 of Myanmar Post and Telecommunication of the Ministry of 
Communications, Posts and Telegraphs concluded at a training of MPT this 
afternoon.

Speaking on the occasion, Minister for Communication, Posts and Telegraphs 
Brig-Gen Win Tin said Communication and Postal Training Centre of MPT has 
projected to open 93 courses of 62 categories in fiscal 1999-2000; up to now 
66 courses of 48 categories have been opened, and the remaining courses will 
be conducted as scheduled;. two two-week postal accountancy courses will -be 
also conducted; the first one will began on 20 December; MPT will conduct 
more courses in accord with the requirements of the practical field.

Opening of various courses is to bring out skilled personnel in the 
respective fields and to raise their work efficiency.
Radio operators who have completed today?s course will have to attend 
four-month on job training courses to enhance their skills and other trainees 
who have completed Basic Electronic Course 2/99, Basic Telegraphic and 
Technology Course 2/99 and Postal Clerk Refresher Course 2/99 will be 
assigned duties at the respective regions. He expressed belief that staff who 
have completed the respective courses will work with more efficiency by 
combining their knowledge learned at the courses and work experiences gained 
in the practical field. They should strive to fulfil the communication 
requirements of their regions by applying these combined abilities, he added.

(10)    Medical equipment donated to hospitals
YANGON, 10 Dec-Under the medical exchange programme between two countries, 
University Hospital of Caen (CHU) of France donated medical e4uipment worth 
US S 90,000 to Yangon General Hospital, Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital 
and Orthopedics Hospital.
Ambassador of France Mr Bernard Andre Marie Amaudric Du Chai Faut and 
Professor Allein Suisse of University Hospital of Caen presented medical 
equipment to Minister for Health Maj-Gen Ket Sein, who accepted the donation 
and presented certificates of honour to the donors.Present on the occasion 
were Deputy Minister Dr Mya Oo and officials.

YANGON, 10 Dec-Minister at the State Peace and Development Council Chair 
man?s Office Brig-Gen Abel met Mr D  Weinspach of G C German Consult. Rinteln 
of Germany, who called at his office at 1.30 pm today.Also present at the 
call   were officials of National AFTA Unit.

(12)    Myanmar Mayflower Bank opens branch in Myingyan
YANGON, 10 Dec- Myanmar Mayflower Bank Limited opened its 19th branch in 
Myingyan, Mandalay Division, on 8 December. The ceremony to mark the opening 
of the branch was held in the Mani Kinsana Hall. It was attended by member of 
the State Peace and Development Council Chairman of Mandalay Division Peace 
and Development Council Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint, Chairman of Myanmar 
Mayflower Bank Limited U Kyaw Win and Executive Directors, divisional, 
district and township authorities, entrepreneurs and guests.
Later, Commander Maj-Gen Ye Myint formally opened the branch on Market East 
Street in Ward 7.A total of 1,617 persons deposited over K 41 million on the 
opening day of the branch in Myingyan.

(13)    Bangladesh delegation concludes study visit
YANGON 9 Dec - The study delegation led by Maj-Gen A.M Mansur Ahmed of 
Defence Services Command and Staff College of Bangladesh left here by air 
this morning at the end of its visit.

The delegation was seen off at Yangon International Airport by Commandant of 
Command and General Staff College Brig-Gen Soe Tint, Deputy Director of 
Military Training and military officers, Military Attache of Bangladesh Brig 
Nasiruddin Sarwar and the embassy staff.

(14)    288 members resign from Migyaungye NLD 
        
YANGON, 10 Dec-A ceremony to present letters of resignation of 288 members of 
Migyaungye Village-tract National League for Democracy, Magway Township, 
Magway Division, was held at Migyaungye Village Basic Education High School 
at 10 am on 29 November 1999.

Two hundred and eighty-eight members of Migyaungye Village-tract National 
League for Democracy, Magway Township, Magway Division, of their own 
volition, resigned by sending letters of resignation to the party concerned 
on 29 November 1999 as they no longer wished to participate in party politics 
of NLD.

Member of Migyaungye Village-tract NLD U Kyi Myint, on behalf of the party 
members, explained about the resignation from the party. Member of the party 
U Tin Shwe handed over the letters of resignation to member of Township 
Multiparty Democracy General Election Sub Commission U Kyaw Lwin.
