National: Checks if alien gun runners are wanted men
KUALA LUMPUR, Fri. - Federal police are expected to liaise with their =
regional counterparts to establish if members of a gun-running =
syndicate, all foreigners detained recently are wanted by authorities in =
their respective countries.=20
The police are also expected to liaise with Interpol, based in Lyons, =
France, to establish if those detained are linked to extremists groups =
with international links.=20

Police have detained a fifth suspect, also a foreigner, following their =
success in Batu Caves on Wednesday.=20

Composite identification and fingerprints are expected to be transmitted =
to policing agencies in the region and Interpol soon to verify the =
identity of those arrested here.=20

However, police are tighlipped over the arrests and seizures as =
investigations are still under way.=20

Initially thought to be a gun-running syndicate, police are leaving no =
stone unturned in the course of their investigations following the large =
cache of firearms and ammunition seized.=20

Although it could not be immediately established, it was understood the =
cache comprised automatic pistols, revolvers and assault rifles.=20

Police also seized about 1,000 rounds of ammunition of various calibre, =
including 9mm and .38, the types used for revolvers and pistols. The =
seizure on Wednesday was the largest scored by police in recent years.=20

On Aug 30, city police dealt a crippling blow to gangland activities =
following the arrests of suspected members of a gun-running syndicate =
and seizure of firearms and ammunition in Pandan Perdana, Cheras.=20

Police seized three revolvers, an automatic pistol and several hundred =
rounds of ammunition from a car parked near the Pandan Perdana Lake View =
Apartments.=20

Although both gang members were not linked, police are baffled as to why =
the gang of foreigners would travel with such a large cache.=20

The New Straits Times learnt that police are investigating the =
background of those detained to establish if they had any political =
affliations, besides being criminals.=20

This follows recent incidents of incursions into foreign missions here =
and abroad.=20

The most recent was the hostage taking incident at the Myanmar embassy =
in Bangkok. Before this, there was an intrusion at the US embassy here.=20
