Student prisoners given extended prison sentences by State Peace and
Development Council (SPDC)

In August and September 1998, demonstrations by Burmese students resulted in
another crackdown by the Military Junta. Many students involved in the
activities went into hiding but were later caught and arrested, subsequently
receiving long prison terms; their sentences ranged from 7 to 52 years. While
awaiting their sentencing, the students were detained in Military Intelligence
Service (MIS) interrogation camps, where many were tortured and sustained
severe injuries. Some of the students and their sentences are as follows:
Name: Sai Si Thu Aung
Age: 22 years
University: Institute of Economy
Year: Second year
On 25 August 1998, at 10:30 in the morning, Sai Si Thu was arrested by MIs,
returning from an examination at Basic High School No(1), Kamaryut Township. In
January 1999, he was sentenced to 7 years [according to 5(j)act] imprisonment
under the Insein Prison Code. Presently, he is still in detention at Insein
Prison, where his health is in very bad condition due to drinking contaminated
water.
Name: Kyi Thar Nyein
Age: 22 years
University: Yangon Institute of Technology
Year: Second year
In September 1998 Kyi Thar Nyne was arrested by MIs at Shwe Bo. After his
arrest, he was interrogated in Yangon, and sentenced to 7 years [according to
5(j)act] imprisonment under the Insein Prison Code. When ICRC came to Burma to
investigate prison conditions in June 1999, he was secretly transferred from
Insein Prison to Kalay Prison, and 7 more years were added onto his sentence.
Name: Thuya Aung
Age: 21 years
University: Haling College
Year: First year (Chemistry)
In 24 August 1998, at 5:30 PM, Thuya Aung was arrested by MIs at his house in
Kamaryut Township, and sentenced to 7 years [according to 5(j)act] imprisonment
under the Insein Prison Code. He is currently serving his sentence at Myitkyina
Prison(Northern Burma).
Name: Myo Min Htike
Age: 23 years
University: Yangon Institute of Technology
Year: Second year
In September 1998, Myo Min Htai was arrested by MIs at his house and sentenced
to 52 years [according to 5(j) act] imprisonment under the Insein Prison Code.
Currently, he is serving his sentence at Pathein Prison.
Name: Htein Lin Aung
Age: 22 years
University: Hlaing College
Year: Second year (Physics)
On 24 August 1998, Htein Lin Aung was arrested with his wife by MIs at his
house in Kamaryut Township. Three months later, his wife was released and he
was sentenced to 7 years [according to 5(j)act] imprisonment under the Insein
Prison Code. He is now being detained at Insein Prison.
Name: Kyaw Swar Swe
Age: 23 years
University: Association of Government Technical Institute
Year: Second year (Electrical Power)
In 22 September 1998, during a demonstration, Kyaw Swar Swe was arrested by MIs
on 30th street in downtown Rangoon. He was sentenced to 14 years [according to
5(j)act] imprisonment under the Insein Prison Code. He is serving his sentence
at Pathein Prison.
Name: Chan Nyein Win
Age: 24
University: Association of Government Technical Institute
Year: Second years
On 23 September 1998, in the evening, Chan Nyein Win was arrested by MIs at his
house and sentenced to 14 years.
