            KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 4 (Bernama) -- The Yang di-Pertuan Agong =
Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah has congratulated the Chairman of =
Myanmar's State Peace and Development Council Senior General Than Shwe =
on the occasion of his country's Independence Day today.=20

            "We are confident that the traditional and cordial ties =
existing between Malaysia and Myanmar will continue to be strengthened =
in the years to come," he said in the message released by Wisma Putra =
here.=20

            Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Mahathir Mohamad in his =
messsage to Than Shwe expressed confidence that this auspicious occasion =
would inspire the people of Myanmar to strive even harder towards =
building a dynamic and prosperous country.=20

            "I would also like to take this opportunity to express my =
fervent hope that the close bilateral ties and cooperation between our =
two countries will be further strengthened in the years to come for the =
benefit of our two peoples and the region as a whole," he said.=20

            Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar also sent a =
message to his counterpart, U Win Aung.=20
