" Government of Myanmar Grants Clemency to a  NLD Member "

    The Government is pleased to announce that U Tun Zaw Zaw (a) U Tun Tint 
Wai, a member of the Youth Wing of the National League for Democracy Party 
was  eleased under a clemency being granted to him by the Government on 
December 31,1999.U Tun Zaw Zaw, (33) Years, was arrested on August 18,1998 
for forgery of
citizen's identification card. He was convicted of two crimes, one under the  
penal code section 420 for cheating and the other under the penal code 
section 468 for forgery. He was sentenced to 7 years' of imprisonment for 
each kind consecutively.

    He was granted a remission for both sentences under a clemency and on 
humanitarian grounds after his mother appealed to the Government for her 
son's release.

    U Tun Zaw Zaw is in good health. During his detention at Thayarwaddy 
Correctional Centre he has been undergoing eye treatment for Optic Nerve 
Atrophy and Optic Nerve Neuritis at Thayarwaddy Civil Hospital. He was later 
transferred to Yangon- Insein Correctional Centre on November 16, 1999 to be 
able to receive
specialist treatment and care  from the Eye, Ear, Nose and Throat Hospital in 
Yangon. He has suffered his eye disease since his childhood.

    According to the Eye Specialist's report U Tun Zaw Zaw has been suffering 
from this eye disease since his childhood failing to take proper medical 
treatment in
the early stages of his disease. Unfortunately, in spite of the professional 
treatment and close medical care currently receiving, the chances for his 
improvement and his being cured at this stage of the disease are not 
encouraging.

    Due to his crucial phase of his eye malfunction and also the appeal made 
by his mother on November 30, 1999 for familial consideration, the Government 
granted a clemency to U Tun Zaw Zaw on December 31, 1999. The Government has 
also extended all possible assistance to the family in their continuation of 
eye treatment for U Tun Zaw Zaw.
