British-Australian Activist and Political Prisoner James Madwsley Staging
Hunger-strike Campaign in Kentung Prison<br>
<br>
</b>News from Shan State stated that British-Australian activist and
political prisoner James Rupert Russell Madwsley has began staging an
ongoing hunger-strike campaign in the Kentung prison as of December
18<font size=1>th</font><font size=3> 1999. <br>
<br>
James Madwsley was arrested on August
31</font><font size=1>st</font><font size=3> 1999 in Tachileik
by the military government for distributing anti-SPDC documents. <br>
<br>
He was charged under Article 17 of the Press and Publishers' Registration
Act of 1962 in the Tachileik township court. A secondary charge of
illegal entry was placed upon him as well based on Article 13(1) of the
Immigration Act of 1947. Although Madwsley has been charged with a severe
sentence of 17 years imprisonment, the grounds under which the SPDC
government is basing the sentence is unjustifiable. The reason being that
the documents found on Madwsley were printed outside of Burma thereby not
infringing any of the Press and Publishers' Registration Act. He also
paid the legal entry fee of five American dollars into Tachileik, as
stated by the government. Despite the SPDC's unsustainable evidence James
Madwsley was imprisoned at Kentung prison in Shan State for 17
years.<br>
<br>
James Madwsley had been arrested two times prior to his current
imprisonment for demonstrating against the SPDC's oppression of freedom
and harsh abuses against human rights. The arrests were conducted in the
townships of Rangoon and Moulmein.<br>
<br>
As of December 18</font><font size=1>th</font><font size=3>
1999, James Madwsley began his ongoing hunger-strike campaign in Kentung
prison to this day. Sources near the Kentung prison states that he has
taken nothing by mouth except for water. It has been known that the
reason behind his hunger-strike campaign is to demonstrate against the
unlawful imprisonment of student leader Minn Ko Naing also know as Paw Oo
Htun. <br>
