(1) Multi-Media Teaching Centres, Related Facilities Being Introduced to Make
Students More Media-Conscious
Chairman of Myanmar Education Committee Secretary-1
of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin
Nyunt attended the opening of multi-media teaching
centres of No.1 Basic Education High School in South
Okkalapa Township and No. 6 Basic Education Primary
School in Kyauktada Township. The Secretary-1 and
party inspected the altar room, the computer-aided
instruction room, the computer application and e-mail
room, the educational broadcasting service, the
language lab, the painting room, the domestic and
handicraft exhibition room and the music room.
(2) Kayin New Year Day Observed
Kayin New Year Day was observed at Insein Township
in Yangon on 6 January under the sponsorship of the
Kayin New Year Day Organizing Central Committee.
Present were patrons and executives of the central
committee, members of the respective subcommittees,
Kayin nationals and guests. Chairman of the central
committee Prof. Saw Simon Tha presided over the
ceremony. Prof. Saw Simon Tha and Patron of the
central committee Lecturer of Yangon Technological
University U Saw Baldwin Khaing Oo(Retired) gave
speeches. The report of the Central Executive
Committee was read by joint Secretary Mahn Kyaw Nyunt.
Then, greetings were extended in Eastern Po, Western
Po and Sakaw Kayin Languages. Prizes were presented
to students outstanding in various fields.
(3) Myanmar Free of Y2K-Related Problems
Y2K-related Problems Supervisory National Committee
issued on 6 January an announcement that to be able to
cope with Y2K-related Problems Supervisory National
Committee, and with a view to making its functions
more effective, Y2K facts collecting, compiling and
assessing subcommittee and Y2K-related problems
solving subcommittee have been set up, also.
Y2K-related problems solving committee for ministries
and Y2K-related problems solving committee and
leading committee for public banking services have
been formed, and assistance has been provided,
experience shared and department-wise contingency
plans put into operation to have readiness for
Y2K-related problems. Until now, there are no
Y2K-related problems which can have a serious effect
on routine works. In the communications sectors,
there has been a slight change in the data of X.400
mail system and measures are being taken to solve this
problem.
(4) Horticulture Show and Competitions Continues
The eighth Horticulture Show and Competitions to mark
the 52nd Anniversary Independence Day continued at
No. 8 Sports ground in Bahan Township for the sixth
day on 6 January. A total of 192 shops are selling
flowers, vegetable, fruits and kitchen crops at the
show.
(5) Nursery Market Festival Continues
The Nursery Market Festival sponsored by Myanma
Agriculture Service, continued on Palekyun in
Myaypadaytha Garden in Bahan Township for the third
day on 6 January. A total of nine booths were opened
at the festival. Three-day sales of agriculture
equipment and educational books at the booths
amounted to over K 1 million. The festival continues
on today 8 am to 6 pm. Admission is free for all.
(6) University Student Mountaineers Conquer Mt Victoria
The mountaineering team which conquered Mt. Victoria
,10018 ft. (3053 metre), the highest in Chin State,
arrived back Yangon on 6 January. The team led by U
Myo Thant, Chairman of Yangon University
Mountaineering Association, scaled the mountain
hailing the 52nd Anniversary Independence Day, the
40th founding anniversary of Myanmar Hiking and
Mountaineering Federation. The team which included 45
mountaineers from Mandalay Institute of Medicine,
Institute of Dental Medicine (Yangon), Hline College
and Yangon University conquered it on 1 January.
(7) 6th Leg of Myanmar London Golf Tour Begins
The Sixth Leg of Myanmar London Golf Tour jointly
sponsored by Myanmar Golf Federation and Myanmar
Professional Golfers Association began at Shwe Nat
Taung Cantonment Golf Club in Mawlamyine on 5
January. After the first round, veteran golfer Myint
Thaung is leading with 67 strokes while Soe Kyaw
Naing, Win Naing Tun and Min Lwin Oo tie at the
second place with 71 each. Official co-sponsors of the
tournament are Tiger Beer, Universal Consumer Goods
Co. Ltd. Yangon Airways, Mims Logistics, Max, Soft
Guide Computer, Canon and Wilson. They are providing
for the tournament as they did in the previous legs
of the tournament.
