Secretary-1 attends meeting on observance of
53rd Anniversary Union Day

YANGON, 6 Jan - A meeting on observance of the 53rd
Anniversary Union Day was held at the Office of
Commander-in-Chief (Army) with Secretary-l of the
State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin
Nyunt in attendance.

Secretary-l Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt delivered an address
at the meeting.

He said the 53rd Anniversary Union Day would be
observed with the four objectives:

(1) For all the nationals to safeguard the national
policy-non disintegration of the Union, non disintegration
of national solidarity, and perpetuation of sovereignty,

(2) Perpetual flourishing of Union Spirit among
the entire nationals,

(3) For all the nationals to strive in harmony
and unison for the emergence of an enduring State
Constitution leading to emergence of a new
discipline-flourishing nation, and

(4) For all the nationals to ward off with national
solidarity the danger of distructionists from inside
and outside the nation who are disturbing the State
stability, peace and development.

Union Day is observed every year, and endeavours are
being made to achieve better political and national
essence year after year. All 135 national races have
lived in unity like brothers and sisters in the Union
of Myanmar since yore. The nationals have lived in
unity in the land since Stone Age, Bronze Age and
Iron Age, and historical documents firmly show that
the land has become a Union since from the time King
Anawrahta who built the First Myanmar Empire.

Attempts to break up the Union never occurred at any
period throughout history of Myanmar countable by years
in thousands. As the First Myanmar Empire became weak
in strength, endeavours were made to build the Second
Myanmar Empire.

Therefore, the Union system had not broken. The Union
became more consolidated and powerful in the time of
the State leaders who are qualified both physically
and spiritually,

Although Myanmar fell under servitude due to weakness
in national strength resulting from the power struggles
in the court, the national leaders were able to launch
anti-colonialist struggles with Union Spirit.

It has obviously been seen that national race leaders
conducted anti-colonialist struggles.

Only after the nation had regained her independence,
there emerged declining of Union Spirit because of
the influence of evil legacy of colonialists who had
driven a wedge between national races for over a
century. The ill effects to efforts for developing
the nation and its economy can be seen till now.

Thus, after the Government had assumed State duties,
it made endeavours to firmly build national solidarity
and as a result, nearly all the armed groups had returned
to the legal fold and only one group still remained far
from the legal fold due to the outside instigation.

Using destructionists neo-colonialists are making head-on
confrontation with endeavours of the government in their
attempts to put the nation back under their influence.

Relying on aliens, the destructionists without having any
sympathy for the people are launching perpetrations to
destroy national peace and stability and slow down the
national development pace to cause sufferings to the
 people.

Especially they are attempting to sow discord and drive
a wedge between national groups which have joined hands
with the government in striving for national development.
Today, perpetrations of the destructive group trying to
destroy national solidarity and the Union have become
more obvious. The government will not let the national
solidarity and stability and firmness of the Union be
destroyed again.

The Secretary-1 quoted Head of State Senior General
Than Shwe as saying that today is the time to strive
for vitalisation and flourishing of Union Spirit,
and it is the duty of all the national races to always
strive for flourishing and propagation of Union Spirit
for perpetuation of the Union.

In conclusion, Secretary-1 urged all to strive in
unison for success in realisation of the objectives
of the 53rd Anniversary Union Day.

Afterwards, Maj-Gen Khin Maung Than explained
arrangements for observance of the 53rd Anniversary
Union Day and so did Director-General U Myint Thein
of Pyithu Hluttaw Office.

The meeting ended with the concluding remarks
by the Secretary-l .
