Plans under way to uplift higher education sector to meet
developing South-East Asian nations' standard
Y ANGON, 7 Jan-Myanmar Education Committee held its meeting 1/2000 at Yangon
Universities Central Council this morning with an address by Chairman of MEC
Secretary-1 of the State Peace and Development Council Lt-Gen Khin Nyunt.
The Secretary-l said in Myanmar, not only the Ministry of Education but also
other ministries are paying serious attention to the education field in
taking up responsibilities sector-wise. The government expenditure on
education and health sectors is the largest in the nation next to that of the
road and bridge sector.
Significant success have been achieved in the basic education sector due to
participation of the people. The government is making harmonious efforts for
uplifting the education sector to meet the international standard and for the
flourishing of all-round education based on Myanmar culture starting from the
primary level, achieving progress which is not lower than that of the
developed nations of South-East Asia. With the ardent participation of
parents and people, multi-media class rooms are being set up in implementing
education promotion programmes.
As Myanmar is an ASEAN member, it has become essential to promote the entire
education sector for the flourishing of an education system which is at par
with other ASEAN nations; the guidance of Head of State Senior General Than
Shwe has been sought to make plans for the emergence of a higher education
system which is not lower than that of the developed nations of South-East
Asia within a four-year period. In line with the guidance, arrangements are
under way to improve teaching methods, subjects, modem teaching aids,
techniques and buildings of the institutions of higher learning.
As a first step taken in promoting the higher education sector, learning
centres have been set up at open universities; and the Ministry of Education
and the Ministry of Information are launching joint plans to introduce
information technology the computer network system and the satellite data
broadcasting system in the sector.
In addition to broadcasting lessons to learning centres in States and
Divisions, the central needs to make arrangements for holding discussions
with the centres. In accord with the counsel of the Senior General all the
respective ministries should collectively strive to introduce modern teaching
aids and improve teaching systems, subjects and buildings for the emergence
of a higher education system which is not lower than that of the developed
nations of South-East Asia within a four-year period.Minister for Education U
Than Aung, Deputy Minister U Myo Nyunt and officials explained plans to set
up information technological equipment and multi-media resource centres at
institutions of higher learning, exchange education and share experiences
among universities, use modern equipment in establishing open universities
and learning centres and set up satellite data broadcasting systems.Minister
for Information Maj-Gen Kyi Aung and officials reported to the meeting on
arrangements being made to install data, broadcasting system for telecasting
lessons to learning centres, application of information technology, email,
Internet and WebPages.
Also present were,ministers, the chief justice, the attorney-general,- the
auditor-general, the chairman of Civil Service Selection and Training Board,
deputy ministers, the chief of Armed Forces Training, the director of Medical
Services, officials of the State Peace and Development Council Office, heads
of department and officials.
