Mutual regard and esteem
One of the milestone s raised during the millennium about to end was the
establishment of ties between the Union of Myanmar and the Republic of
Indonesia on 27 December 1949 , which meant five decades of mutual respect ,
sincerity and goodwill has been passed along by the successive government
which took the reins in these two countries.
This historic milestone was marked by the exchange of messages of
felicitations between Senior General Than Shwe and Mr K H Abdurrahman Wahid ,
whose statesmanship , foresight and consideration for the wellbeing of
nationals of both countries are beyond reproach.
Senior general Than shwe in his message said he took great pleasure to
extend warmest felicitations to the leader and peoples of Indonesia and HE Mr
Wahid similarly shared such sentiments.
It is to be pointed out here that both Indonesia and Myanmar were among
the founding nations of the non-Aligned Movement , and there has been
incomparable cohesion between the two nations by way of cooperation even
during the struggle for regaining independence.
Both nations have nurtured mutually beneficial cooperation and held aloft
the five principles of peaceful coexistence which were laid down at Bandung
and which have become a beacon in promoting friendship and understanding
between the two countries.
