New book on Burma

"Whispers at the Pagoda: Portraits of Modern Burma" has recently been
published by Orchid Press (Bangkok). The book, by American author Julie Sell,
contains rare interviews with a cross-section of Burmese citizens that
provided important context on the most significant political, social and
cultural issues in the country today.

Interviewees include former student leaders of the pro-democracy movement,
leading scholars and journalists, Buddhist monks, doctors, teachers, a
long-serving military man, and young students, among others. All names have
been changed to protect individuals who cooperated with the author. The book
contains photographs, including some rare images of the pro-democracy
movement, and a map. A more detailed description of the book may be found on
Amazon.com.

Julie Sell is a former journalist with The Asian Wall Street Journal and The
International Herald Tribune. Her work has also been published by The South
China Morning Post, The New York Times, and National Geographic News Service,
among others.
