According to World Health Organization (WHO), tuberculosis problem in
South East Asia region is explosive. About 40 percent of the world's 8
million TB cases live in the region and every year 3 million more are
added, while nearly a million die of tuberculosis. Five countries,
Bangladesh, India, Indonesia, Burma and Thailand are high prevalence
countries with 95 percent of all TB in the South East Asia region.
According to Burmese government sources, there are estimated 100,000 new
tuberculosis cases in Burma each year. But, estimates of
non-governmental organizations in the region are much higher than the
government's figures.
