The Statesman (New Delhi)
October 28, 2000

NEW DELHI, Oct. 27. ? Myanmar will probe the incident in which three
Assam Rifles jawans were killed and two injured in inadvertent firing by
its army, which took them for Naga militants.

The external affairs ministry spokesman said India has requested Myanmar
to keep it informed about the probe.

India?s ambassador to Myanmar, Mr. Shyam Saran, has contacted the
authorities. The MEA spokesman said Indian and Myanmarese authorities
are in touch with each other.

The Union home ministry said three Assam Rifles jawans died when a
patrol party on a mission of the area near Border Pillar 153, close to
Lungwa in Nagaland?s Mon district, came under fire from Myanmar army
units.

The Myanmar army has sent a note to the Assam Rifles Post at Lungwa
explaining that it was a case of mistaken identity.
