The visiting Burmese Home Minister Colonel Tin Hlaing met Indian Defence
Minister Mr. George Fernandes at his South Block office this morning in
New Delhi. The meeting lasted about 25 minutes. There is no official
word from the Defence Ministry regarding the matters discussed in the
meeting.

However, sources in the Defence Ministry said that it was a formal
meeting where the two ministers expressed their satisfaction over the
cooperation between the two armies along the north-east border. The
issue of the death of Indian soldiers on October 25 in Nagaland border
also came up during the meeting.

India has expressed that it is satisfied with the follow-up actions
being taken by the Burmese authorities after the incident.

At least three Indian paramilitary soldiers were killed in a remote
northeast border when Burmese troops opened fire as they mistook the
Indian soldiers for Naga guerrillas.

Burma later tendered its ?unqualified apology? and said that it would
launch an inquiry
into the incident. Two other Indian troops were also injured in the
shootout.

Mr. George Fernandes was a vocal supporter of the Burmese democratic
struggle. He still allows some exiled Burmese pro-democracy activists to
function from his official residence at 3, Krishna Menon Marg in New
Delhi.

Burmese Home Minister Colonel Tin Hlaing is on a nine-day official visit
from November 1 onwards at the invitation of his Indian counterpart Mr.
L. K. Advani.
