PM leaves for Vietnam, Indonesia trip

New Delhi, Jan. 7 Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee on Sunday left for
the two-nation tour of Vietnam and Indonesia along with two of his
junior ministers and several top officials.

Before leaving, Mr Vajpayee said that the visit was part of India?s Look
East policy and aims at strengthening relations with the countries in
Southeast Asia.

He said that the agreements signed during his visit to the two countries
would infuse new content into the ties.

Mr Vajpayee is accompanied by junior foreign minister Ajit Kumar Panja
and Omar Abdullah and his principal secretary Brajesh Mishra.

His delegation also includes defence, atomic energy, agriculture,
culture and tourism secretaries apart from officials from the external
affairs ministry.

?We have traditional friendly ties with these countries and I am sure my
visit would further boost relations,? Mr Vajpayee said before his
departure.

Several cabinet ministers including union home minister Mr. L.K Advani,
external affairs minister Mr Jaswant Singh, Information and broadcasting
minister Mrs Sushma Swaraj, Mr Agriculture minister Nitish Kumar,
Communication minister Mr Ramvilas Paswan, sports minister Ms Uma
Bharti, urban affairs minister Mr Jagmohan, Mr Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa and
Mr Shanta Kumar, besides the three service chiefs and senior officials,
were present at the airport to see Mr Vajpayee off.

Mr Vajpayee will begin his visit from Vietnam where he would meet
president Tran Duc Luong, secretary general of communist party Mr Le Kha
Phieu and his counterpart Mr Phan Van Khai.

Mr Vajpayee?s visit to Hanoi is the first by an Indian prime minister
after the bilateral visit of Mr P.V Narasimha Rao in 1994.

Vietnamese president Tran Duc Luong had visited India in December 1999,
while external affairs minister Jaswant Singh had recently gone to Hanoi
for a meeting of the 10th joint commission.

Mr Vajpayee said that he would discuss a range of bilateral and The
prime minister said he would discuss a range of bilateral and global
issues of mutual concern with the leaders of Vietnam in Hanoi.

?India was also closely co-operating with Vietnam and Indonesia in the
international and regional fora, including Asean,? said Mr Vajapyee
adding that Vietnam and India were members of the new initiative of
Mekong-Ganga co-operation which also includes Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar
and Thailand.

?These countries have close affinities and the co-operation in tourism
and other activities would strengthen these linkages for the benefit of
our peoples,? he said. On the second leg of his visit Mr Vajpayee would
reach Indonesia on January 10.

The Prime Minister said that his visit to Indonesia would continue the
process of dialogue initiated during Indonesia president Abdurrahman
Wahid?s New Delhi visit in February last year. He said that Indonesia
was a close neighbour separated by less than a 100km of sea.

The bilateral visit to Jakarta is takes place after a long gap of 14
years since the visit of Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi in 1986.

During the twin visit, India is likely to sign several agreements with
the two nations. India and Indonesia will set up a joint commission
while agreements in the field of defence, oil exploration, peaceful use
of nuclear energy and trade are likely to be signed with Vietnam.

In addition to setting up of a joint commission between the two
countries, several agreements would be signed on culture, agriculture,
defence and railways. A high-level business delegation sponsored by
FICCI also would be in these two countries during the Prime Minister?s
visit.
