Woman arms dealer nabbed in Shillong

Shillong, Jan. 10: For the first time in the history of the Meghalaya, a
women smuggler with sophisticated arms and ammunition was arrested by
the police here last night.

In a joint operation by the State Police and the CRPF, a Myanmrese
national identified as Mawii Tlavallawt was arrested from Lawjynriew at
around 8 p.m here last vight.

Police recovered a huge nacho of arms from her.

Briefing newsmen, Bast Khasi Hills SP. G. H. P Raju, said that the
police recovered 30 rounds of AK-47 rifles, ten rounds of 9 mm pistols,
two US pistols and two Chinese 9 mm revolvers from the house of Mawii,
Mr. Raju also said that the arms smuggler came to Shillong as a massive
hunt by Tripura Police is on to nab here I have contacted my counterpart
in Tripura on the arrested the SP said, adding the during interrogation
she confessed that the arms were meant for the Hynniewtrep National
Liberation Council and NSCN. When asked whether the smuggler deals in
arms only for the two outfits, Mr. Raju said that she might supply arms
to the ULFA and other outfits of the north-eastern region.

The SP also informed the pressmen that route being used by smugglers
starts from Thailand Naya Bazar in Bangladesh and then through
Dawki-Balataa-Bholaganj.

Smugglers are using unloaded coal trucks coming from Bangladesh for the
transportation of arms. The smugglers also use the Pynuysla Smit village
route to bring arms and drugs to Shillong. It is a known fact now that
Shillong is a transit point for arms and drug smugglers the SP said.

The SP also said that the association of the woman smugglers were
suspected to be Manipuris and Mizos.
