The umbrella organization of women activists from Burma had adopted
a working plan of the action for the next one year in its Congress,
which was concluded last Friday. The Women's League of Burma (WLB),
composed of twelve women organizations from Burma borders with
Bangladesh, India and Thailand, held its first Congress in a Thai-Burma
border area from January 22 to 26. It was participated by the total 28
women representatives of the organization, coming from different parts
of Thailand, Bangladesh and India. According to the press release issued
at the end of the Congress, the Burma women activists had discussed on
the matters relating the future platform for action, which gives
priority to the capacity building of women, foreign affairs, refugee
affairs, and peace-building and national reconciliation in the year
2001-2002.

The Congress also adopted its Constitution in which they have outlined
the active women?s participation towards a peaceful civil society. ?When
we talk about peace, it is not only stopping the wars, but it is also
achieving the situation where there is no discrimination between men and
women, and also means safe life for our children,? said Ma Nan Yin, who
is one of the newly elected secretaries of the organization. During the
Congress, the women representatives elected a Presidium Board composed
of women representatives from each member organization and a
three-member secretariat to implement its future action.

The Women?s League of Burma was founded in December 1999, aiming to
developing mutual understanding and unity between ethnic women and
encouraging women to participate actively in the democratic movement and
national reconciliation in Burma.
