While the world at large condemned the move of Gen. Pervez Musharraf who
declared himself as President of Pakistan on Wednesday, Burma and India
for its own reasons have welcomed the Pakistan military ruler. Burma
which itself is ruled by a military government is the country along with
India to welcome Musharraf on becoming President. Senior General Than
Shwe, head of the ruling State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) in
Burma has sent a congratulatory letter to Pakistan?s new president, the
state-controlled media reported today.

Musharraf paid a three-day visit to Burma last month in a sign of
solidarity with the Burmese junta, which is also beleaguered by Western
sanctions. During his visit, he met senior leaders of the Burmese junta
including Gen. Than Shwe.

India also formally congratulated Musharraf who now holds three most
powerful positions in Pakistan. ?I extend my best wishes on your
assumption of the office of President?, President K.R Narayanan said in
a letter to Pakistan leader. India is now preparing to host the Pakistan
military ruler with a full-fledged state honor on July 14.

Gen. Musharraf who took over power by a coup in October 1999 is now head
of state, head of government and Chief Executive and Chief of Army
Staff.

The United States, the Commonwealth nations, Australia, Russia and the
United Kingdom have however expressed their concern on the new
development in Pakistan. The US has said the move of Gen. Musharraf was
?another turn away from democracy? and it will not lift current
sanctions till a democratic government is in place.
