A prominent ethnic leader who had closely worked with Burma's democratic
leader Aung San Suu Kyi had passed away last week in Rangoon, according
exiled activists.

Mr. Tg. Vungh Za Pau, general secretary of Zomi National Congress (ZNC)
died during a stomach operation in a Rangoon's private hospital on June
23, said a group of Chin activists in exile "Zoheisa Group" in its fax
release to Mizzima today. His party colleagues and several members of
National League for Democracy (NLD) attended his funeral held on June 26
in Rangoon.

Mr. Vungh Za Pau, aged 34, was born in Tiddim township in Chin State of
Burma and graduated from Rangoon University in 1993. His party Zomi
National Congress won two parliamentary seats in the 1990 elections but
the military junta cancelled the party registration in 1992.

When the Committee for Representing People's Parliament (CRPP) was
formed in 1998, Zomi National Congress participated in the CRPP along
with other parties that had won in the elections.

After the arrest of ZNC president Mr. Cin Sian Thang in 1999 by the
military government, Mr Vungh Za Pau took part in the CRPP as
representative of ZNC.
