Statement on the 54th Anniversary of Martyrs' Day of Burma
Fifty four years ago on July 19, 1947, the national hero and architect of
Burma's independence, General Aung San and seven other cabinet ministers
were assassinated by the political rival in Rangoon. This tragic event has
remained in the hearts of the people of Burma as a great loss.
The young architect of Burma's independence, Gen. Aung San and others
were student activists who took a leading role in promoting political
awareness and patriotism in Burma. Gen. Aung San also fought for freedom
and equality for all ethnic nationalities and reconciliation of national
unity.Under the leadership of General Aung San, the British and
the Japanese were repelled from the country, and finally regained her
independence one year after Gen. Aung San's death.
Newly liberated Burma was, unfortunately, devastated by the military backed
so-called socialist regime led by General Ne Win in 1962. Since then, any
efforts made to address freedom and democratic rights have been brutally
suppressed, and ethnic conflicts have continued. General Aung San's
people's army is no longer loved and respected. To this day in Burma his
beloved daughter, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the National League for Democracy's
(NLD) General Secretary and the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize Winner, has carried
on his glory and continues the fight for freedom, justice, democracy and
national reconciliation.
Today, July 19, 2001, in commemoration of the 54th anniversary of Martyrs'
Day of Burma, the Democratic Party for a New Society (DPNS) honours Burma's
national leaders Gen. Aung San and other fallen martyrs, who sacrificed
their lives for the betterment of their people and nation.
On this occasion, the DPNS also welcomes the recent release of political
prisoners, and urges the regime to release Daw Aung San Suu Kyi and all
remaining political prisoners unconditionally as showing their sincerity
for the ongoing talks. Furthermore, the DPNS calls upon Burma's military
leaders to carry on a genuine dialogue with all concerned parties to bring
about democracy, peace, human rights and stability in Burma.
