Press Conference held in New Delhi to mark the 13th anniversary of the
1988 democratic uprising in Burma. This conference organised by the
Friends of Democratic Movement in Burma was attended by members of
parliament, human rights activists and other intellectuals.

Speaking on the occasion Shri. J. Chitharanjan. Communist Party of India
member of Parliament expressed the unqualified support of his party for
the democratic movement within Burma. Drawing attention to the
imprisonment and torture of thousands of pro-democracy and human rights
activists, Shri. Chitharanjan said,"The Government of India will have to
exert pressure on the Myanmar government to restore democracy."

The Congress-I member of Parliament Shri. Mani Shankar Aiyar, saluting
the struggle of Aung San Suu Kyi and her comrades sought to remind
everyone "that we cannot be free as long as others are in chains." He
blamed the "lack of a larger vision" in present foreign policy for the
reluctance of the Government of India to engage the Burmese regime on
human rights issues. Shri. Aiyar recalled India's commitments to several
international human rights treaties and covenants and emphasised that
human rights must be " at the core of any engagement with Myanmar."

Also speaking on the occasion Shri. Ravi Nair, South Asia Human Rights
Documentation Centre called for a "multi-polar engagement" between govt.
of India and the regime in Burma, one that would encompass human rights
issues. Shri. Kamal Mitra Chenoy, JNU criticised the lack of discussion
and transparency on foreign and defence policy and reiterated that it
would be in India's own interest to work for the restoration of
democracy in Burma.

Following the press conference a public protest was also held at Jantar
Mantar. The protest was organised by Burmese pro-democracy activists,
including student and Burmese ethnic minority organisations. The
demonstrators demanded release of all political prisoners, restoration
of full political freedoms and an end to military repression and other
human rights violations in Burma..They also renewed their call for the
support of the international community especially India, in their
struggle.

A petition signed by over 1000 people from different parts of India was
also submitted Amnesty International India to the Embassy of Burma. The
petition demanded the immediate release of all political prisoners, an
end to torture and ill-treatment and the persecution of ethnic
minorities. The petition, calling on the Burmese regime to conform to
international human rights law, was submitted as part of a global
campaign against torture. Amnesty members all over the world and Asia in
particular are campaigning for an end to repression and torture in
Burma.
