India should develop for cross border tourism with neighbors

Mizzima News (www.mizzima.com)

New Delhi, Oct. 20: Mr. Vinod K. Duggal, Director General of the
Ministry of Tourism in India suggested that Indian tourism industry
should develop ?focused cross border tourism? with neighboring countries
including Burma (Myanmar). He was speaking here today at the Second
International Conference cum Showcase, ?India: Tourism and Heritage-
Challenge 21?.

The 3-day international tourism conference, jointly organized by the
Confederation of Indian Industry (CII), Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of
External Affairs and the Government of Uttaranchal, ends today in New
Delhi. About 300 delegates from India and abroad participated at the
conference.

Mr. Vinod K Duggal, speaking at a session on "Partners in Progress",
said Indian tourism industry should develop for religious tourism with
Burma, Cambodia, Vietnam, Indonesia, etc.

Hundreds of pilgrims from Burma visit the Buddhist sites in India such
as Bodh Gaya and Nalanda in Bihar every year. The pilgrimage starts from
October. At present, most of the pilgrims from Burma come to India via
Calcutta by Indian Airlines. There are some recommendations already made
to implement the cross border tourism for the Burmese pilgrims via
Manipur State of India.

Mr. Vinod K Duggal also said that the ?New National Tourism Policy? for
India would be announced before the end of the year. ?This has been
framed, keeping in mind the importance of Tourism as an industry", he
stated.
